The motto of New Orleans is “laissez les bon temps rouler”, a translated as “let the good times roll”. It’s something you can see and feel, it’s the spirit of New Orleans. In the 60s and 70s New Orleans became a prominent centre of funk, and was home to some of the earliest and now legendary swamp-funk bands. “Funk” has several different meanings in American popular discourse, but since the 1970s it has largely connoted a heavily syncopated, groove-centered style of African-American music. New Orleans, where every occasion is a reason to groove. The New Orleans Funk Express have dedicated themselves to presenting the music and rhythms of the Crescent City. Known for their outstanding groove-laden performances and leaning on the funk tradition of playing hypnotic grooves that WILL get you bopping, these eight outstanding musicians are renowned for their renditions of New Orleans funk. In this show, they present N’awlins classics from legendary artists including The Neville Brothers, The Meters, Doctor John, Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, Rebirth Brass Band, and much more.
